I’m in the middle of taking my first vacation from running and exercising. Since I started working out consistently 6 years ago, I have never missed more than 2 days of workouts except due to illness. Only pneumonia has made me miss a week. I had decided a while ago that after my half marathon I was going to take a week or so off, so here I am on exercise vacation.
What I have discovered so far is that I have a lot more time on my hands when I don’t work out. That has been nice. It was the kids’ last week of school, so it was great to have some extra time to get things done around the house. I also did a lot more cooking than I usually do which was welcomed by the whole family. Running and exercising is also social for me, though, so I’ve missed my running buddies and the friendly faces at the gym.
I’ve been a little worried about losing some conditioning, but I’m trying not to think about it. I’ve got plenty of time to get ready for my marathon. I’ve noticed that I’m not nearly as hungry as I normally am. Not burning the extra calories, I don’t feel like I can indulge in my usual desserts and snacks, but I haven’t really been very hungry.
I’m going to do some fun things with the kids the first few days of next week and then hopefully get going on Wednesday. It will be like starting a new chapter in an empty journal. I wonder how the story will go.

It’s always nice to have some down time. Enjoy! Your training will start sooner than you think. I’d love to meet in NYC, let’s plan on it! We still haven’t found a place, our goal is to find a h otel by Monday though.
Have a fun vacation!
Enjoy the rest of your break – I think it will be great to start your marathon training fully rested.
Enjoy your break! Once you start training, you will look back on these days with nostalgia!
It’s so nice to get time off and take a break, just never enough time in a day to get everything done! But lose to much time with out working out we can lose a lot. That’s the boat I’m in right now, lost a lot of training. But that’s life!
Hi Beth,
God, I wish I had time off to rest! Enjoy your time and enjoy some for me too:) Woo hoo for cooking and getting stuff done around the house! My house is a pit:( I am attempting to talk my hubby into either helping me or getting someone to help us. He is not going for either of my suggestions:) Happy workout vacation!
Time off is an important part of training…so enjoy every minute! I’m sure the kids are loving this
No way you are going to lose conditioning not running for a week. So enjoy your guilt free week off!
I’m trying to take a month off – talk about the guilt…
It is nice to have the time off, enjoy every second of it!
Sorry your half didn’t go as well as you’d like. Sometimes it’s like that isn’t it?
Enjoy your time off. You’ll be itching to run again soon I think.
