In the end, I decided not to race today. It doesn’t feel like a let down because I actually had a pretty good week. On Monday I ran with the Run Club. Mike has been a member for many years, but I rarely get to run with the group. I found myself on Monday afternoon with dinner already made and the kids not needing chaperon services, so I ducked out at the last minute to join the group. It was great to meet some new runners and catch up with the group.
I made it to the lake for two open water swims. The highlight was that I took my son Brady out for his first open water swim. He wore Mike’s wetsuit and did great swimming back and forth across Little Long Lake. His first tri will be the Door County Sprint on July 17th and I think he is well on his way to being ready for the swim portion. For both of my swims this week, the water and weather were amazing. Lake swimming is something I never would have considered before I started doing the triathlons. I’m so thankful that I’ve had a chance to experience the peacefulness of swimming outside.
I had two good bike rides, one of which was an all women’s ride organized by the local bike shop, Gear West. It was my first time doing a group ride. The idea was to show everyone a safe route from the suburbs to downtown. It was great to ride somewhere new and to see what a group ride was like. Going to something like that by myself was a little out of my comfort zone, so I’m proud of myself for giving it a try. I kept up just fine and met some nice people.
In deciding not to race, it really came down to the run. I ran several times this week, but just 3-5 miles at a time. I’m still sore but feel like I’m getting better. I just didn’t feel like racing for 2 1/2 hours was going to leave me feeling strong. Even taking it slow would mean I was working out for longer than I am prepared for. Door County is three weeks away and I know I can be ready if I keep increasing the intensity of my workouts without over doing it. I had a great time watching the race, taking pictures and cheering for Mike and our friends. They all did great and provided motivation for me to get out there the next three weeks and train hard. Oh, by the way, the t-shirt for the race was awsome. Bummer! I think I will have to sign up for this race next year and get myself one.

Probably a good call skipping the race – you’ve got lots coming up on your calendar to look forward to!
I love your new pic on the side bar!!
Continue being wise and may the future reward that with many other great races! And great the kids doing a Tri. It was so special when my son did Grandma’s with me!
Group ride! Nice job.
A group ride sounds kind of interesting but scary. How did it go? Was it hard riding with lots of people? I’m thinking of doing one too, thanks for this post!
Hi Meg,
Oh my goodness, you son Brady is doing his first Tri on July 17th!?! He is on his way to being a great athelete! His running is already super speedy and it sounds like his swim is strong too:) He is taking after dad and mom:)
I am glad that you are enjoying your open water swims…you make them sound wonderful. Also, you sound really pleased with your group ride:) Keep up all of your hard work Beth and it will pay off!
I meant BETH….I just read Meg’s comment! Grrr:)
Hey thanks for the checkup! Just been out of running for an injury spell and just life busyness. About to start vacation in Colorado, and that is always a good time to kick up the fitness and relaxation time.
Hope your training is going well. November will be here sooner than you think!
Love that line, “… found myself with dinner already made…”
You’ll go out and rock Door County. I might have to look at that myself.
