Little Spring, Little Break

by Beth on March 26, 2010

Thanks for all of your sympathies regarding my PF. It sounds like many have had personal experience with PF and I share your pain. The doctor I’m seeing suggested that I cut back my miles for a couple weeks while I work on strengthening my foot. Thanks to Helen for her suggestion that I try taping it myself. I’m going to give that a try along with the stretching and exercises. It normally drives me crazy to take some time off, but I keep telling myself that its only March and it’s all about NYC. The Marathon isn’t until November, and now is the time to take care these things.

Its good timing since for Spring Break we went to Aruba! We took the kids scuba diving and completed our Open Water Certification. Here we are getting ready to ascend after our last dive:

It was a blast! Scuba diving is a great family activity and I can’t wait to do it again. It’s very relaxing and the fish were beautiful.

While we were relaxing on the beach and by the pool, I read Born to Run by Christopher McDougall. Many people are touting it as a call to give up cushioning running shoes and take up barefoot running. The book is much more than that and is worth reading.  It reinforces the notion that I need to strengthen my feet. It also makes me want to try to move away from orthotics and motion control shoes. It would be a long process, but its a path I need to explore. This book is also a great advertisement for trail running. Again, this is something I think I would like to try out at some point. McDougall also writes about finding joy in running which is something that it never hurts to remember. I won’t give a full blown book review, but it’s worth reading.

While we were in Aruba I wasn’t able to get online, so I missed catching up with every one’s postings. I can’t wait to get back in the loop with the everyone and back on schedule with my running. Spring races are right around the corner and I can’t wait to join the fun!

Welcome home, it looks like you all had a blast together. Truly, those family vacays are about making memories, I’m so glad you had fun! I need to read that book, everyone is talking about it. Regarding the pf, my PT has actually recommended that I keep running right now and it has actually improved and healed up! I have been taping it at night and icing it after heavy workouts. I hope feet get better quickly!

Thanks for the info on the book. I’ve been wanting to read it.

Now’s definitely time to rest and get your PF healed. Time to work on the swim stroke and bike maybe?

Aruba sounds fun. We are heading to FL for our spring break this week.

Get that PF healed. I have been struggling with that this whole winter. Miraculously, it healed with switching my shoes.

I have been looking for this book all over town but no one has it.

I am glad you had a great vacation! I can’t wait until my kids are big eneugh to scuba dive. In terms of the PF, I have taped my feet, and I think it works really well. What type of work are you doing to make your feet stronger? I will have to look into that. Did you get into New York – when is the lottery?

PF should be a distant memory before NY. I thought you meant PFS, which I had two months before my first NY marathon. That was tough.

I went to Aruba when I was a kid. Like a 7 year old kid. Stayed at the Divi Divi Hotel, named for divi divi trees. That is about what I remember. My parents made us write a journal, and it was about how gross plantains were, and when we saw a lizard. Sounds like you had more fun!

Great photo!

I really enjoyed that book also – and it is about so much more than the bf running. He’s a good storyteller – though I think a few of stories are somewhat embellished!

Hope the taping works – I don’t think I mentioned but I was taping my feet at night a lot of the time – sort of same idea as wearing a boot/splint but obviously not as intense. It does help as those first few steps in the morning can be pretty painful!

I really hope you do try trail running! Hyland Park is a great place to start with as many of the trails are less technical that some of the other parks (Afton, Lebanon etc)

Sounds like a wonderful vacation! Congratulations on your open water certification…that is so cool.

Sorry about the PF…I am going through tendon issues myself and I know how frustrating injury is! The book sounds great…it’s funny you mentioned strengthening the foot…it just dawned on me a week ago that I have not been paying much attention to strengthening my legs…we suffer and we learn!

Scuba diving looks like a great time! I have been wanting to read Born to Run . . . I’ll have to pick it up on my next Borders trip.

What a great vacation! Sounds like it was a fantastic trip!

True story…I worked at a golf course in high school, and one of my buddies in the shop went and got his scuba certification so he could dive in the ponds for golf balls. He sold them back to the shop for resale in the used golf ball bin and made a killing!
