Guess How Many?

by Beth on October 1, 2010

The thing I liked best about training for a marathon for the first time was that every week’s long run was the farthest I had ever run. Each week was a cause for celebration and a hefty dose of patting myself on the back. Mike and the kids were the constant target of my question, “Guess how many miles I ran today?” Even though they knew the answer was probably one more mile than when I asked them last week, they would play along. “How many?” Then they would act appropriately impressed. This is true love. I’ve probably asked them this question hundreds of times over the course of all of my training, but they always act like they are astonished by whatever answer I give them.

It’s a week and a half post surgery, and guess how far I went? I walked two miles this morning and two miles this evening. Four miles! How is this possible? Pain pills. You can’t see me but I’m patting myself on the back right now which is not easy to do. It was a beautiful fall day and I loved every minute of it. I’m not breaking and speed records, but I’m getting around  pretty well.

Walking around the block was not the only cause for celebration this week. I found out that I won’t be receiving chemotherapy. I’ll be monitored closely, recover from my surgery and continue with reconstruction, but I won’t be receiving further treatment for now.

I don’t know how long it will take for walking to turn into running, but I am excited at the prospect. I won’t be running the TC10 this weekend, but I was able to change my registration for the Monster 10 Mile on October 30th to the 5K race on that same day. That’s thirty days away. It’s strange for me think that 30 days ago I didn’t even know I had cancer, and now I’m already well on my way to recovering from the surgery. Who knows what life will bring 30 days from now?

Glad to hear from you, Beth. I woke up in the middle of the night and prayed for you last night. I’m so glad to hear you don’t need chemo, and that you are feeling well enough to do some walking.

You are such an inspiration! I love it that you’re out there walking and doing what you love to do, moving forward! I was so happy to hear your good news. Now it’s just rest and recovery…your family will back to being impressed with your mileage soon!

Beth – I am so proud and amazed by you. I’ve been thinking about running the Anoka Gray Ghost again but thinking I’d have to get running and train again. I think you are just what I needed as a kick in the butt. Thank you.

Beth, I am so happy to hear you got some good news. I am so glad to hear you don’t have to receive treatment! You and your family have been in my prayers, and I hope your recovery continues to go well.

There will always be races to run, and from the sound of things, I look forward to hearing about you running again soon! :) Continue to get stronger, and recover well.

That seems like such a fast and relatively easy recovery. Good for you. Hopefully things continue in that trend.

I am very happy about your 4 miles, this is a very good start. Very soon you will ran faster than in the past. I cannot wait for reading your next race report.

Hi Beth,
I am so happy that you were able to get out on a walk and enjoy the beautiful fall weather! I am running in the monster half…hope to see you then!

You are always in my thoughts and prayers Beth:) Take care of yourself!

You’ll recover much faster then you think. Kathy walked a 5K four weeks after her heart attack and ran a half marathon 9 weeks after!

Keep getting better!

Hi there! Exciting news! And I love that the weather is cooperating for you.

I’ll be doing the Monster Dash 5K also if you want company. I’d love to do it with you.

Just let me know… Until then, mile by mile! :)
