House Arrest

by Beth on October 9, 2010

After my glorious reunion with the sidewalk last week, I was benched. I was informed that healing is a long, slow process which doesn’t like to be hurried along by antsy, impatient runners. I had to go the entire week with no walking and not much of anything else. I felt good enough to walk, it was just the opinion of the medical professionals in my life that I needed to cut back on my activity level for the week. Luckily, my mom came in town and relieved my husband of his care taking duties. While she handled the kids, laundry, groceries and everything else,  I pretty much slept and did nothing. We did manage to shop a little, eat out a few times, and enjoy spending time together. While Mike is doing a great job taking care of me, it’s always nice to have your mom.

Due to my house arrest, I wasn’t able to go down to the Twin Cities Marathon and TC10 Mile to cheer, but I was rooting for everyone from home. Congrats to everyone! Same for the Chicago Marathon tomorrow. I hope everyone has a great race.

I get released tomorrow and will get to start walking again. I’ve been told that I can’t run or lift weights for 3 more weeks, but I can ease into walking and eventually walk all I want. While I don’t enjoy being tired and not being able to run, as far as cancer treatment goes, this is not a hardship. I loaded an audio book onto my iPod to listen to while I walk. I always listen to music when I run so I thought it would be good to change it up a little bit. It’s slightly pitiful that I’m so excited about going for a walk that I am preparing a day ahead of time. At this point, I’ll take what I can get.

Hi Beth,
I am so glad to hear that you are resting and taking it easy. I had to smile at the house arrest comment:) I have never heard ofr an audio book for the iPod…how cool is that?

Last week I stopped at my Caribou Coffee and wrote your name on a sticker and put it on a poster paying tribute to those with breast cancer. You are a strong and beautiful woman….you are my hero! Cheers to your life Beth! My thoughts and prayers are with you always:)

Get plenty of rest! Have fun on the walk listening to your new book!

The buildings in Chicago are projecting pink lights at night in honor of breast cancer. I immediately thought of you.
Sorry about the house arrest. Sounds like you are making the best of it though! : )

I’m sure it’s the best thing for you but man, that does sound like house arrest. Can’t even go out for a walk. I feel for you.

Take the time… It will pay off in the long run, no pun intended! Nice and slow and soon this will all be past.

I agree: “take what you can get”. Yes you have to take it easy without being in hurry, following the doctor’s advices but …. I had 2 important experiences. After the operation for my skin cancer the surgeon said: “No workouts to avoid the sun”; a running-dermatologis said: “Don’t worry, run when you want but cover yourself with sun-cream and appropriate running items (sunglasses, hat ecc). Moreover, after all the fractures inside my leg, a very famous orthopaedist said: “Don’t remove the prothesis (you can see them clicking on the link “running photos” of my blog or going to http://www.flickr.com/photos/12419047@N00/2271940058/) and don’t run anymore. I removed the prothesis and I am running again.
So Beth, listen to your doctor but …. listen also a running-doctor. All the best. I am sure that very soon you will be faster and stronger than before.

I like Black Knight’s advice – ‘Listen to a running doctor.’ But most importantly, listen to yourself. I think doctors sometimes get caught up in prescribing the same treatment for everyone, even though their patients run the gamut from completely unfit to completely fit.

Keep working at it, but listen to your body and do what feels right!

More power to you Beth.

My opinion, for what it’s worth: If it doesn’t hurt and you aren’t too exhausted, exercise is fine, in fact it’s good. As a current cancer patient, on medications, I say listen to your body – if it feels good and you don’t think you will hurt yourself, then just do it.

Best possible recovery to you, Don

Praying for a speedy recovery for you, Beth.

I’m glad you can get out for some walking again. The books to listen to should be a nice change – I always get really sucked into books on tape. Keep going strong with your recovery!

Glad to hear that you are getting a lot of help. Do what feels right. This is a the perfect time of year to run – so enjoy! Take some pictures bring along some coffee. That is what I plan on doing :)

I CANNOT relate to cancer. I CAN relate to recovery and not being able to run. I just found your blog and really enjoyed reading through your past posts! I’m a runner also from MN, way north! Best of Luck with your recovery. You seem like an incredibly strong woman and you’ll be back full force in no time!

Been a while since I checked in… ugh. Tough diagnosis. Hope to hear about how well things are going for you soon.
