Green light means GO! On Friday, the doctor gave me the go ahead for running and that is exactly what I did on Saturday morning. Mike ran the Monster Half Marathon which started early and was a point to point race. The finish line of his race was the start line of my race which started late morning. While I was trying to find him, I ran into Julie who had just finished her half marathon. Julie is a special person because she is just as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. She cares about everyone she meets and always has a smile. It was great to see her again in person.
As the crowd started moving across the start line for the 5K, Mike and I found each other and we moved ahead with the pack. My plan was to jog and walk as needed. Good thing I hadn’t counted on running fast because that would have been impossible at this race. It was a zoo. There was no attempt by the race organizers to record finishing times. There were too many people and it was very chaotic. It was fun to look at all of the costumes and it was a beautiful sunny day. I wouldn’t do this race again, though, as it was just too many people.
That being said, I loved every minute of it! It felt strange to run for the first mile, but I felt pretty normal for the next two miles. My heart rate was higher than it would normally be, but who cares! I ran the whole way and couldn’t have been happier. I ran slowly but by the end I wished the race had been longer. The race was short at only 3 miles. My splits were 10:57, 10:15, and 10:07. Not too shabby for someone who had a couple of body parts lopped off and hasn’t run in 5 weeks. I’m not ashamed to say that I spent the rest of the day smiling about those three miles.
The best part of the race was running the whole way with Mike. He has been my cheerleader, caretaker, and voice of reason throughout this whole ordeal. Over the 20 years of our marriage, he has been the patient and optimistic voice in our relationship. I feel like I’ve learned something from him and tried to maintain that patient, optimistic mindset since that phone call on September 9th. It has made all of the difference. Running this race feels like turning the page in a book. I’m ready to move on to the next chapter.

Yah for this 5k! That’s wonderful! And so fun you and Julie got to meet in person. I ‘know’ her via bloggyville and she seems great;-)
And super yah for you and Mike for the race, your BFF.
Go Beth! I am so proud of you! Damn it, your posts always make me tear up:) I am so glad that you enjoyed running in this 5K…you did it and I know that you were smiling the whole way! Congrats on a great race! I am so glad that we were able to see each other. I ended up missing you at a few of the other races that we ran in…so this was a bonus:)
Hang on to that hubby of yours! Mike is a good guy:) I love the picture of the two of you…you both look so happy!
Take care Beth! I know that you and Mike are most likely going to be skiing this winter but let me know if you decide to do any other races. Maybe we could meet up again. Hugs!
You are amazing! What a great blessing God has given you to have such a supportive and loving husband to be with you through the ups and downs of life.
What, no blood… Kidding. Glad your return was enjoyable. Those type of races can be a hoot. My son did the gorilla race in Denver (with the entry came a gorilla suit) and that was slow but fun. You are blessed and doing well and I am still going to add you to my prayers, even though you have th best attendant and angel in mike…
I bet the next chapter is where the story really gets good too. Rock on!
This is so fantastic. I was so excited when I saw the post on facebook!! You are back on the path – great!!!
Congrats on the half, but this is only the beginning. You have much more ahead of you. Sounds like you have an awesome husband and he is very supportive.
Wonderful! Simply wonderful. I am so happy you were able to get back to running so quickly, Beth. It must have felt fantastic to run the race, and I am thrilled for you.
Congratulations, and all the best in your continued recovery. Onto the next chapter indeed!
I am very happy for you, this is the beginning of the next chapter. You are ready for other goals. All the best. Brava!
Great training run for the Chesterfield Turkey Trot 5K! Just a short three weeks from now.
Way to go! Glad to see you’re back.
Congrats on the 5K and getting back to running. I need to email you. Please drop me an email so I can send you a note.
Thanks
Great job on the 5k – I love the pic of you and your hubby. It was a total zoo at the finish area, I agree. I saw much of the 5k while waiting in line for the bus and I was rooting for you.
Great race on 5k. Great pictures with your supportive husband keep it up. Good luck for the next race.
Wanting you to know we are keeping on remembering you!
We are cheering your keeping on….
Blessings and best wishes, today and every day.
Beth – found you blog via Julie’s 1/2 marathon report. Way to go! Sounds like you had a great run! That is so wonderful that you are able to run again. Being diagnosed is a “never forget the moment” that your life changed – but there is life after cancer and honestly – it can be a wonderful life.
enjoy
It sounds like you ski – I just planned a trip to Colorado for the first week of January – I can’t wait!
Hi Beth!! I was thinking of you the whole time I was in NY! I didn’t know where you’d be but I was hoping you knew that you were a part of my run!!
I hope you’re doing well, thanks for your support!
Congrats on running the 5K race! I’d smile all day, too! : )
Wonderful! So glad to hear that you were able to run the whole race…what a gorgeous couple you two make. I’m really happy for you. Yay Beth
