Conspiracy

Being an endurance athlete in Minnesota requires spunk, flexibility, and a bit of stubbornness. The winter weather is always a challenge, but it’s pretty rare that I let Mother Nature get in the way of doing what I want to do. I’ll run outside as long as temperatures are above zero, and that’s pretty typical for other athletes here. Up until last week, I would grade this winter’s activities as an “A”. Having a break through with cross country skiing and running with Scout have been highlights. If I had to quit doing my thing for the rest of winter, I would still give it high marks.

But I don’t want to quit for the rest of the season. I’m not quitting, but taking a forced break. Nothing to worry about, just the second surgery that’s the normal part of reconstruction. I’ve known it’s been coming and have been trying to cram in as many of my favorite activities as possible before.

This week was a bit of a disappointment in that regard. I pulled all of the muscles in my shoulder and upper back a couple of months ago, a complication from the reconstruction process, and I had been tolerating it. I couldn’t swim or ride the bike on the trainer (or sleep well), but there were still plenty of fun things to do without a shoulder. A few days before we left for Disney, the shoulder got bad enough that I knew I had to do something about it. I started therapy for it as soon as we got back, which is good, but I can’t ski while it heals. No problem, I can amuse myself running with my friends and the dog.

Minnesota friends are good to run in anything above zero, but the dog has expressed that he would prefer it to be above 10 degrees. It was minus 30 degrees this morning. It’s been barely above zero all week and the dog can barely tolerate going outside to do his thing. Running with the dog has been out since my last post. While I was hoping that this week would be filled with all of my favorite activities, my shoulder and Mother Nature conspired against me. I ran this week, lifted weights and did lots of PT exercises and stretching, and even felt like my shoulder was improving enough to ride the bike on the trainer once for an hour. All good stuff but still a little disappointing since I had had my heart set doing all of my favorite things.  I probably had my expectations too high. I have three days left to run and lift and I plan to make the best of it.

Once I have surgery this week, I can’t exercise at all for a week and then only walking for another two weeks. It will be three weeks of taking it easy before I can run again. From what I understand, it should be an easy recovery. It’s a quick and uncomplicated surgery. No worries. I’m looking forward to this last big step so I can be done with this part of my treatment. After, I’ll assess where I am and start training for the season. With near record snow fall there should still be time left to ski. Training for my half ironman starts just a couple weeks after I’m back, and I have three half marathons on my schedule this spring.

Having sat out for five weeks and then coming back and running a great race at Disney makes me a lot less anxious about missing three weeks this time. It is what it is and I’m thankful that it’s not more than that. I’m officially putting my request into the weather man for good weather for mid-February. Until then, get out there so I can run vicariously through everyone else!

You have the most amazing attitude Beth and that will pay off in spades. Best of luck with the surgery–I know you’ll be up and running just in time for this frigid weather to pass and you’ll start to train for all the races and fun stuff you have planned. Hugs girl!

Consider your forced rest a taper.
You Minnesota people are truly hardcore. We’ve been having unseasonably warm weather here. I bet your dog would enjoy it. :)
Good luck with the surgery.

Your words have motivated me to get outside today and run. I had plenned to do my 16 inside but the thought of going around and around a track for 2 or more hours kind of sickens me. So Im going to bundle up and embrass the winter.

My prayers are with you this week and during your recovery.

Take care

So glad to hear that this will be your last surgery in your journey. I am sure at times this has all felt like a whirlwind and at other times it seems like it has taken forever! Once this is done – you will begin the process of really putting it behind you. Moving on to the next phase of your life and LIVING IT to the Fullest! And that sounds like you have the pretty much planned out – half ironman (Crazy – in my opinion – I am not a strong swimmer !!!! ) but love the half marathons.
Yup – up to this week the winter weather here in WI has been pretty good – nothing too cold and snow – but not that much! Well that obviously changed this past week – brrrrrrrr. I ran a couple of mornings this week – Mon morning I think the 6AM temp was 20 – Thurs morning the temp was 7 – and I didn’t even think about running yesterday when the temp was -11.
Today I am planning (I think) to run in the Freeze for Food (what an appropriate name) 10K. It starts at 1PM, so it will be a little warmer. I will see just how motivated I am!
Prayers will be sent your way for a speedy recovery.

Good luck on the surgery but you are in the right spirit to take the best from this period of tapering.
Very soon you will be again strong and fast. Go Beth, my thoughts are with you.

All the best to you, Beth. I hope the surgery goes well, and that your recovery is swift! You are in really good shape, so three weeks off shouldn’t be too big of a deal for you – and then you will be able to attack all of those goals. Good luck to you!

This past week has been awful for weather! Just unbelievable. I am hoping for a big warm-up!

Good Luck with the surgery Beth. I’ll be talking to the big guy for you. Rest up now so you can come back stronger than ever.

Rest up and recover quickly! I’m looking forward to reading about your next race! : )

Hope all goes well with the surgery this week! I’m sure the snow will stick around for quite some time yet, so you’ll definitely get some skiing in. :)

I’m interested to hear about your half iron training plan. I’m thinking about doing the half iron at Chisago in July but am totally intimidated by the swim . . .

You are going to come back even stronger. The 3 weeks will give all the little nagging injuries time to heal. You have a TON of time before the HIM. GOOD LUCK!!

You always have such a wonderful attitude! I really needed your words today, your priorities and hopeful outlook are much appreciated. I hope your surgery goes well and I know you’ll be back to full activity in no time. Big hugs to you!

Hi Beth,
I hope that your surgery goes well and I have been thinking about you alot lately. Sorry to hear about the shoulder…hopefully it will get better soon. Sending you tons of good luck and well wishes Beth!

OMG! Can you believe our freaking cold weather mother nature decided to give us last week!!! When ever it gets cold like that our garage door opener desides to go on strike! So frustrating not to get outside for runs too. February is going to be better, I can feel it!

Take care of yourself! Love and hugs!

Beth, I agree that this forced rest will only make you stronger. You have a wonderful attitude which will serve you well through your coming surgery. Good luck and best wishes for a speedy recovery :)

Once again, Kiddo, you have more spunk and stamina than most and I know these three weeks will just fly by and you’ll be doing all of your favorite FUN things again before you know it. I will be thinking of you Dear Girl…I know the surgery will go well. BIG HUGS!
