Race for the Cure

by Beth on May 8, 2011

Happy Mother’s Day! This morning I joined 50,000 others at the Mall of America for the Race for the Cure. My friend Lisa told me that she was going to run in my honor this year which touched my heart. She runs every year with her family and I asked if I could join her. Not only is Lisa one of the best mother’s I know, but she is also a true friend that loves with her whole heart. It was a beautiful morning for a run to celebrate Mother’s Day and to support finding a cure forĀ  a disease that is on my personal s#@* list.

Funny, everyone woke up this morning and felt like wearing pink!

Here I am with Lisa and her husband before the race.

Deb, my dear friend and running partner, runs every year with her family. Here are Deb and I with one of her grandchildren. Deb was diagnosed with breast cancer a year before me and has supported me and been there for me for every step of my journey. It was really special to see her celebrate with her family.

After picking up some freebies at the booths, we joined the pack for the race. This was more of a celebratory procession than a race, but we were able to run at a nice pace. It was touching to see everyone running in memory and celebration of the ones they love. Here is a picture of Lisa with my name on her back.

A year ago, the idea that someone would be running with my name on a sign because I had cancer would have been frightening. Today, seeing Lisa smile in the sunshine made me happy and proud to be honored in such a way.

Here we are after the finish.

After a great morning with my girlfriend supporters, it was time for a little family celebration. When the kids were little, it seemed like every Mother’s Day we were driving home from visiting family and we would inevitably end up at a McDonald’s eating breakfast. After a few years, we decided to embrace it and make it our tradition. Here we are continuing the tradition.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Super event! Those Komen people know how to put on a serious crowd. We had about 60,000 at the St. Louis run last year.

But that McDonalds is for pre-race fueling – at least that seems how I’ve been using it!

Marvelous post, Beth. How wonderful of your friend Lisa to run in your honor. Absolutely awesome! And I love your McDonald’s tradition! It reminds me of many family holidays, as it seemed we were always on the road and stopping at McD’s. Very cool.

Looks like you had an amazing Mother’s Day!

A beautiful day for a great cause. Wonderful pictures.
Even if I don’t have miles in my legs (I am off again for a bronchitis) on may 22nd I will run the Race of the Cure in Rome with my family.
As a cancer survivor this race is a commitment for me. Here are some pictures taken in Rome

So glad you enjoyed the Race for the Cure. I was amazed the first time I saw my name on a placqard! Someone was walking in my honor.
This year will be my 7th Race, I remember that the first year I was bald. Luckily I now have more hair ;-)
I loved that you continued with your Mothers Day tradition of having breakfast at MickyD’s.
