On the Road Again!

by Beth on February 15, 2011

Monday morning, Scout and I hit the roads for the first time in three weeks and were greeted by glorious sunshine. Mother Nature has welcomed us back to the running world with above freezing temperatures and clear, dry sidewalks. It felt great! Well, for me it felt great. Scout was really excited when I pulled out the Stunt Puppy and he ran with enthusiasm for the first mile. Then, not so much. He lagged behind for the last two. While I have been cross training on the bike and in the gym, his training plan has consisted of nappy time. He’s a little deconditioned. Better him than me!

Since I haven’t being able to run, I’ve been at the gym almost every day stretching, doing leg exercises and sit ups followed by time on the bike. I can really tell that my legs and core are stronger. Doing sit ups and core work every day instead of two or three days a week is something I’m hoping to continue. When I did my two minute plank for the first time in three weeks, I felt rock solid. I’m glad to be able to do upper body lifting again and hopefully it won’t take long for my arms and shoulders to get strong again. I have little hope that I will ever be able to crank out push ups like I did before, but I’m okay with that. I’m feeling great, I’m happy with how I look, and I did what I had to do. There are more important things than push-ups, like living!

Recovery time is over and I’m counting down to the start of Half Iron training. Three weeks to do whatever I want. Sounds like fun!

For the first time in ten years I am going to a trainer to help me out wit my core. I am a good 45 seconds away from a 2 minute plank. Good for you!

This week has been just wonderful. I wore shorts outside for the first time this year! :)

Sounds like your gym time is really paying off, and it will most certainly benefit your half Ironman training. Awesome job, Beth! Keep up the great work!

What a cheerful post! Now you’ve got me wondering if I should do core work more often than 2-3 days a week, too. Thanks for the idea!

What a great job on the planks, those are so HARD!! You are getting so strong, you should be so proud of yourself!

By the way, thanks for your comments and inspiration!!

I am very glad to read that you are on the road again. You are an inspiration, you never surrender: you always find something to do if you cannot run. Brava!

I am so happy for your recovery. You are well on the road to healing. Sounds like you are so enjoying yourself – I would LOVE to be able to go to the gym daily and devote the time to core work. Sometimes not being able to do “something” allows us to focus on other things and in the end . . . it is all for the better.
I am so ready for warmer temp’s. Last weeks warm temp’s spoiled me. Think Spring!

I was about to forward the Chad Austin article on me to a cousin I’d recently found. I read comments on it and one was yours, Beth. Now I read your great journey and it makes my ultras sound miniscule. More importantly I’m over 27 years sober, now age 71 and looking forward to the Snowshoe 10K Nationals on March 12 in Cable, WI. Also the USATF 100K Nationals on April 9th in Madison, Wi. Also the Human Race, Get-In-Gear and the FANS 24 Hour, my 21st on the first Sat. in June around Lake Nokomis. BUT your MCM!!!! I’ve done it and it is so humbling!!!! I have a story about a wounded Marine runner. I can share, but enough for now.

Thanks again for your comment.
