When Mike and I were in NY for him to run the marathon, there may have been a moment or two when I was pouty. I’m an apologizer, one of those annoying people that apologizes for apologizing, so I was pouting and apologizing for pouting at the same time. Missing the marathon because of my breast cancer surgery made it difficult to go and watch the race. Mike has IM Florida on his schedule for this year which is the same weekend as NY Marathon, so I wouldn’t be able to use my deferral for NY 2011. While I am the apologizer in our relationship, Mike is the fixer. He gave me the gift of picking any race that I wanted as a make-up race for NY Marathon. Getting excited about a new race was exactly what I needed at that moment.
It didn’t take me long to decide that the race I wanted to do was the Marine Corps Marathon. I wanted a race in the fall so that I would have time to devote just to running after my half iron triathlon in late July. I also wanted something big. I wanted a race that would be exciting enough that just participating would be an experience to remember. As soon as I considered MCM, I knew it was the race for me. I put the registration date on my calendar and have been anxiously waiting ever since. In the meantime, two of my friends/training partners have decided to run MCM. Having friends to plan and train with makes it all the more exciting.
Today was registration day! I’m in! Me and 30,000 others will be running through our nation’s capital on October 30th. I don’t think I’ve been this excited about signing up for a marathon since I signed up for my very first one. That time, the excitement was accompanied by a large dose of fear. This time, it’s all just excitement. Semper Fi! *
* I have to admit that I had no idea what this meant and had to google it when my friend used it in celebration of her registration. It means “always faithful.” Another interesting tid bit I have learned about the marathon is that Marines give out the medals. This race just keeps getting better!

Good!! If anything you deserve to be excited about this upcoming year in training, and races. New to the scene here, but I know enough to see you have been through a lot.
Good Luck.
It is a honour for me to be the first to comment your post.
I am glad you did it, I am sure it will be a wonderful experience. You won’t believe but I have a shirt of the MCM, a nice change of gifts between runners.
Good luck and enjoy your training to the marathon.
MCM is on my To Do list. Enjoy!
Here’s a variation of Semper Fi used by Marines I have covered in the past: Semper Gumby… “Always Flexible.”
Have fun!
Beth, I am so excited for you! This is awesome. I have heard this is one of the best races ever. This will definitely be something to look forward to. Congratulations on getting in, and all the best with your training!
You seem like someone who is “always faithful.”
Congrats on the entry, that race seems so significant and emotional to me. How fun, new goals and plans!
I want to run that race someday and explore the area as a tourist, too. I’ve never been to DC. Have fun training!
Exciting news! That race is on my to do list!
Yay, Beth! Can’t wait to hear all about it.
Sounds very exciting. I can’t imagine running in a big race with that many people. BUT every time I read a race report from a big race it sounds amazing and the crowds are electrifying!
