Official training for the Chisago Lakes Half Iron starts Tuesday, but I’ve decided to start a few days early. Today was Lifetime Fitness Ride of Your Life and it was the perfect kick-off for triathlon training. We went down to the St. Paul River Center and met up with 8 other running friends for the 2 hour spin class. It’s billed as the world’s largest spin class, but I don’t know how official that is. I’m guessing there were over 1,000 participants, so certainly a very big class to say the least. Here are Mike and I setting up our bikes:
Everyone received and was asked to wear a LT Cycle Club jersey. Here we are with some of our group waiting for the start:
The two hours went by quickly. We spent a lot of time standing up on the bike, which is not my favorite thing to do in spin class. Standing while spinning is so close to running that it feels to me more like a run workout than a bike workout. I don’t know how well that translates to fitness on the bike. I sat for a little bit of the time we were supposed to be standing because I felt like my quads were getting a better workout sitting down. I also don’t like bopping around on the bike as if it’s an aerobics class. Up on stage they are moving their head and shoulders all around as if they are dancing on the bike. No thank you. I’m the boring type that just wants to ride. I’ll stand up for a while and I’ll sit down for a while, but my view is that dancing should be left to jazzersize class. Just my preference. I don’t mind if everyone else wants to dance on the bike, just don’t give me the hairy eyeball while I just pedal.
I’m excited about starting a new training schedule. The biggest change will be doing two workouts on most days. I’ll try to do most of them back-to-back if I can. I can’t swim right now so I’ll do weight lifting whenever there is a swim workout. It’s a 20 week schedule so the first 8 weeks are base training with the exception of the runs which will have to be longer to accommodate my road racing schedule. Twenty weeks- it sounds like a long time but I know it will go by quickly. Good thing I started a few days early.

1000 participants: was that a meeting for any Guinness?
I have never followed a spin class, I am an outdoor lover.
Glad you have started your training: 2 workouts per day are a tough committment. Good luck.
Spinning classes look murderous to me so I never tried one. Are they to biking like a treadmill is to running?
Good for you getting started on the training! Triathalons are just scary to me – I think I’ll just stick to the running…
Tri training sounds tough! You are going to be so strong! I didn’t know there were any classes as huge as that one and being in a group of friends like that sounds fun.
Hi Beth,
I have been thinking about you lately:) I hope that everything is going well for you! FYI, you look happy and beautiful! Okay, Mike looks pretty good too:) I love the matching outfits. Reading this post makes me want to go out and get a bike ASAP. I really would like to seriously get a bike and use biking as a cross training tool….better for my GI system to handle.
Good luck to you with your intense training! I know that this year is going to be one for the books….you have amazing things that are going to happen in the future:)
Take care and hugs to you Beth!
Suffering AND a jersey….hard to pass that up!
I’d like to do a tri but it seems I always have my hands full with the running thing. Good luck!
Wow, intense training already. You have been healing up so quickly and just moving forward each and every day. Just look at you!! Still beautiful and smiling, as always!!
I can’t wait to hear about your two a day training sessions…keep us posted!
You guys look really great…I love that photo. You both look strong and fit!
I can’t believe you are planning to do two workouts a day, back to back! I’m impressed and inspired!!
Have fun tri-training!
Wow, a thousand participants! That was a huge turnout for a spin class!
Beth, all the best to you as you start with your training schedule. Looks like our weather is set to improve next week, too (finally!). Good luck and much success!
You are so strong – Train hard, don’t hold back, hold the course. Looking forward to hearing about your training progress. Your going to do great things.
