Training is off to a great start! I love saying that I’m training as opposed to just exercising. You can only exercise so much before people think you are a nut. Training is a whole other story. Pick a race that is scary enough and there is no amount of training that can’t be justified. I’m expecting the Half Iron to take me about 7 hours to finish, so to say that I’m scared is an understatement. I not only have fear working for me, but I’ve also got a few things that are making training a little more fun.
1. My new tri bike and I are getting to know each other. I feel like I’m getting used to my bike seat and am really liking riding in the aero position. The best thing about my time on the trainer is watching the TV series “Lost”. I just finished Season 5 yesterday and started the final season today. Given how much bike time is on my schedule, I’m going to need to find a new series to watch soon. Any suggestions? I’d like to find something that is more action/less dialog driven.
2. I’m finally swimming pain free. I had some nerve damage from my surgery and swimming had been very painful and slow. I’m thrilled to be back in the pool and swimming my normal pace. As I’m only on week 3 of training, the workouts have all been 1600 yards or less and go by fast. I’ve got some Swimp3 headphones to combat boredom and the pool isn’t packed with triathletes yet. I’m trying to get in as many swim workouts as I can because, after this week, I’m going to have to stay out of pool for two weeks related to the reconstruction. For now, I’m enjoying the pool and feel like I’m making process.
3. I’ve been trying out a new tool for the last three weeks. It’s the BodyMedia Armband. Those of you that watch the Biggest Loser are probably familiar with the Body Bugg. This is the same thing. BodyMedia makes the Body Bugg and the BodyMedia Armband, selling the Body Bugg to 24 Hour Fitness to market. Being a dorky accountant, I thought wearing one would a good tool for heavy training. It’s been educational and fun to use. I’m going to wear it for a couple more weeks and then I’ll write a blog post about it. While the Biggest Loser makes it seem that it’s just for weight loss, it’s more about moving and fueling, exactly what a long distance athlete is interested in. I can’t wait to tell you all about it.
It’s safe to say that I’m in the honeymoon period of triathlon training. Using a 20 week training schedule means that there will be many highs and lows along the way, but it’s nice to start out on a positive note. I’ve got three weeks until the Earth Day Half which will be my first time doing that race. Something else to be excited about!

I would love to hear more about the body bugg thing – interesting. Glad to hear that swimming is going better!! Here is to some warm training weather.
“Weeds” is a good series. Entertaining, and great cast. I’d recommend it.
Battlestar Galactica (streaming on Netflix) has been my companion, or should I say, sanity protector on my rower.
I have never been on a tri bike. I wonder if my back would like it.
Have fun training. Fun is the key.
I was a late convert to Lost – always hearing people at work talk about it on Wednesday mornings – when I eventually did start watching it – I felt I knew quite a bit about it because of everthing I had previously heard.
If you like action – try 24 with Keifer Sutherland. I started watching that at the beginning and would rave to my husband and sons about it – but they didn’t want to watch it – it actually took them a couple of years before they would watch it – and then they loved it. Lots of action.
Wow – your training sounds like it is going great. I haven’t been on my bike trainer for about a month – I was thinking about actually taking my new road bike out today on the road – but with the high for the day projected to be 29 – I doubt if that will happen. ;-( One of these days!
Hope your next reconstruction procedure goes well and you are back in the water in no time.
I am anxious to hear about the Arm Band.
Have fun and here’s hoping spring comes to the upper midwest soon!
1. When I used to run on the treadmill (after the surgeries) I liked to watch rock concerts dvd;
2. I am going to buy the “water i-pod”. I hope that you find in the pool people who are swimming and no “having a bath” as it often happens here. Glad you are pain free.
3. Curious to know more about the armband.
Good luck on your half.
Hope your 1/2 goes great!!
20 weeks does sound like a long time but it also seems like it is smart training!
I think my pool will start getting more crowded after spring break, mostly with triathletes AND little kiddos!
I wish we had an Earth Day half, that sounds like fun!
I am happy to hear your training is going so well. I have also heard that the Earth Day Half is a great race. You will have fun! And now the weather is starting to improve, too. Keep up the great work, Beth!
Lots of exciting stuff going on around here! Yay for Half Iron training and I’m thrilled to hear swimming is going so well. Somebody’s gonna rock her Earth Day half!
